Over the past years, I have attempted to build a collection consisting of human and animal specimens obtained from ancient archaeological sites. A series of our investigations on them have revealed important scientific information concerning the lives of pre-modern people. Actually, various biomedical researches were undertaken on the samples to reveal the specific diseases prevailing in a pre-modern Korean population. Such diseases include dental caries, tumor, congenital disorders, Rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic injuries, periostitis, degenerative disease, atherosclerosis, and infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, viral hepatitis and various helminthic infections. …

Mummies: the Biomedical Approaches

Since the year of 2002, I have been involved in bioanthropological studies, extending my research interest into paleopathology. By studies on mummies and bones from archaeological fields using various biomedical techniques, we can elucidate the information on health or disease status of pre-modern peoples.
