Over the past years, I have attempted to build a collection consisting of human and animal specimens obtained from ancient archaeological sites. A series of our investigations on them have revealed important scientific information concerning the lives of pre-modern people. Actually, various biomedical researches were undertaken on the samples to reveal the specific diseases prevailing in a pre-modern Korean population. Such diseases include dental caries, tumor, congenital disorders, Rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic injuries, periostitis, degenerative disease, atherosclerosis, and infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, viral hepatitis and various helminthic infections. By the biomedical data that could not be easily obtained from the contemporary materials, a comprehensive view about a vivid glimpse of the pre-modern Korean people’s lives can be successfully acquired. My research focus has been laid upon the health and disease status of premodern people in human history using the techniques of medicine, archaeology, anthropology and history.

My Expertise: Paleobiology; Paleopathology; Anatomical pathology; Mummy studies; Forensic studies on Archaeological Materials; Molecular and computational phylogenetics; Bacterial, viral and parasitological diseases of ancient times; Genetics; Human anatomy; Histology; Immunohistochemistry; Neuroanatomy; Biology and life sciences; Physical anthropology; Anthropometry; Historical archaeology; and Archaeological science.

Mummies: the Biomedical Approaches

Since the year of 2002, I have been involved in bioanthropological studies, extending my research interest into paleopathology. By studies on mummies and bones from archaeological fields using various biomedical techniques, we can elucidate the information on health or disease status of pre-modern peoples.
